REDDING, Calif. -

Honoring and informing veterans was the goal at Shasta College on Wednesday, with a special veterans appreciation program going on in the quad.

The colors were presented in the morning, and the day was filled with free food, drinks, and music. An Army helicopter was parked on campus and there was a long line for free shaved ice.

Several organizations were present to offer up information about future possibilities for returning vets, including the California Highway Patrol and other service providers.

The Shasta College Veterans Club says it is a great way to meet these veterans one-on-one.

"There's a lot of students here that don't know. They don't know that there's other money or benefits for them and their family or for themselves,” said club president Ernesto Perez. “This gets them the information face to face instead of online."

Admission was free at the on-campus event, and was open to the public.
