Sheriff's Office warns of 'warrant' phone scam
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release Thursday that they have received multiple reports of citizens receiving phone calls from someone identifying themselves as an employee of the Butte County Sheriff’s Office. The caller then says they are advising you that a warrant is about to be issued in your name unless a payment is made.
The Sheriff’s Office speculates that the callers may be using a technique known as “caller ID spoofing” which allows them to make their phone number appear to be from the Sheriff’s Office.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office said they do not call citizens to advise them of warrants being issued.
If you receive a phone call from someone identifying themselves as a Sheriff’s Office employee advising of a warrant being issued or requesting payment, do not provide any personal information or credit card numbers.
If you receive such a call, please report it by calling the Sheriff’s Office at 530-538-7322.
