Spilled glass slows I-5 traffic

A big rig crash slowed traffic in northern Shasta County Wednesday morning.
Just after 10 a.m. a northbound truck and flat bed trailer rolled onto its side, spilling a load of approximately 40,000 pounds of glass and partially blocking all lanes of Interstate 5 near Sims Road in Castella. Traffic was diverted onto the shoulders of the freeway. The accident scene is about 40 miles north of Redding.
The CHP said the truck was driven by 52-year-old Charles Palazzo of Redding. He was driving a 2009 Kenworth truck and trailer registered to Sherman Bros. Trucking of Harrisburg, Oregon.
According to investigators, preliminary indications are that the truck was navigating a curve at an unsafe speed when it rolled onto its left side. The crash happened on a curve just north of an electronic cautionary speed sign.
The southbound lanes were cleared before noon. The northbound lanes will be opened after the truck and the glass are removed. The CHP expects the road to be cleared by 3 p.m. Until then, northbound traffic is being directed around the scene using the shoulder. Northbound drivers should expect delays.
