Chico State men's basketball vacates win

CHICO, Calif. -

The Chico State Men’s Basketball team will have to vacate a win after a player is ruled ineligible.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association Executive Council voted to revoke Chico State’s 85-58 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. The game was played Feb. 15 in Carson, Calif.

Chico State Athletic Director Anita Barker said the specific player was enrolled in fewer than the needed 12 full-time class units to participate in the game.

Barker called it a “hiccup” in the university’s process.

"I take full responsibility for this mistake,” Barker said in a statement on the university’s athletic website. “As soon as this oversight was discovered we took action and reported it to the CCAA and NCAA. We have taken the appropriate steps to ensure that this type of error does not happen again."

The win is removed from the team’s won-lost record but the record of its opponent is unaffected, according to the CCAA. Chico State’s conference record is 14-5. Cal State Dominguez Hills’ 4-16 CCAA record is unchanged.

According to the Chico State athletic department, NCAA policy permits conferences to vacate outcomes of conference games but the NCAA does not alter overall records of teams unless directed to do so by the NCAA Committee on Infractions. Chico State remains a lock for the No. 3 seed in next week's CCAA Championship Tournament.
