Ace right-handed pitcher Masahiro Tanaka was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Yankees with right elbow inflammation before Wednesday night's game against the Cleveland Indians.

Tanaka left the Yankees to fly back to New York for an MRI exam on his right arm, the New York Post reported earlier Wednesday. Tanaka, who signed a seven-year, $155 million deal with the Yankees in January, did not disclose an injury after Tuesday's game.

To take Tanaka's place on the roster, the Yankees recalled outfielder Zoilo Almonte from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Tanaka had his worst start of his rookie season Tuesday night at Cleveland, allowing 10 hits and five runs in 6 2/3 innings in a 5-3 loss to the Indians.

He has been dominant in posting a 2.51 ERA and MLB-best 12 wins in 18 starts covering 129 1/3 innings this season.

Tanaka was hit in the left ankle by a comeback line drive on May 4, but he did not miss time.

The 25-year-old logged 1,315 professional innings in Japan by age 24, a figure that dwarfs the workload of most pitchers his age. In one game last season, he threw 160 pitches and then threw 16 pitches in relief in a game the next day.
