Pierre Vaultier of France held off Russian Nikolay Olyunin to win gold in men's Olympic snowboardcross Tuesday.

Alex Deibold of the U.S. grabbed bronze after narrowly edging teammate Trevor Jacob in the semifinals.

The event was pushed back a day because of heavy fog, with officials modifying the format to cancel the seedings run and go straight to the elimination rounds.

Deibold, a 27-year-old from Manchester Center, Vt., is a seven-time Winter X Games participant, with his best finish coming in 2012 at No. 4.

Coming into the Olympics 13th in the World Cup standings, Deibold was already familiar with the Olympic venue in Sochi, having snagged the first World Cup podium of his career there in February 2013 with a second-place finish. He's since added another podium, finishing third in Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada, in December 2013.

Jacob, a 20-year-old from Mammoth Lakes, Calif., ended up in ninth place overall.

Fellow Americans Nick Baumgartner and Nate Holland were both eliminated in their first runs and failed to advance to the quarterfinals in the event. Baumgartner finished 25th with Holland right behind him in 26th place.
