Suspect jumps into river during chase, disappears
REDDING, Calif. -

A domestic violence suspect fleeing from police Saturday evening jumped into the Sacramento River and has not been found.

At about 6:42 p.m., Redding police were dispatched to the 500 Block of Market St. on a report of a domestic violence incident.  When officers arrived, the suspect, Darryl Cunningham, 48, of Redding fled on foot heading northbound on Market St.

While running from officers, Cunningham jumped from the Market Street Bridge into the Sacramento River in an attempt to escape.

Cunningham was last seen struggling to swim in the river while floating down stream.  Officers lost sight of Cunningham when he went under water and never resurfaced.

A search was conducted with the help of the California Highway Patrol, Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, and CAL FIRE law enforcement.

However, the search was called off due to inclement weather and darkness.

At first light on Sunday, deputies returned to the water, but after a couple of hours of searching, called off the effort once again due to low visibility in the river.

Officials will regularly check conditions and resume the search once visibility improves, according to Sgt. Troy Clegg of the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.

Cunningham was wanted on a felony warrant for probation violation and now has a want for domestic violence.  Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Cunningham is asked to call the Redding Police Department.
