REDDING, Calif. -

Shasta County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a vehicle fire off Bass Pond Drive in Millville claimed the life of an unidentified person early Sunday.

The Sheriff's Office is calling this death suspicious.

The fire was reported at 5:59 a.m. to which CAL FIRE responded and found a 1998 Dodge pickup fully engulfed in flames.

"We came out of our house and all we saw were flames," said Stefanie Bowser who lives across the street from where the fire was reported on the 8800 block of Bass Pond Drive.

In the bed of the truck firefighters found a body that was burned beyond recognition precluding a determination of gender.

"The scene was treated as a crime scene," said Shasta County Sheriff's Sgt. Eric Magrini.

Officials were unable to determine the color of the vehicle due to the extent of damage caused by the fire.

"We are working right now with the hopes of obtaining DNA evidence," said Magrini.

The Major Crimes unit was called to the location after the discovery of the body and declared the site a crime scene.

The fire spread to vegetation in the area, covering nine acres according to CAL FIRE.

Bowser said the area is normally quiet, "hardly anything ever happens out here so it's very out of character for the area."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.

An autopsy on the body is set for Nov. 6.
