CHICO, Calif. -

The Butte County Coroner's office has identified the young man found dead near the Chico train tracks early Friday.  The victim is 19-year-old Chico State sophomore James Lowder.

According to Chico Police and the Butte County Coroner, he was found deceased along the railroad tracks near West 7th Street at approximately 4 a.m. Friday, following a call from an Amtrak engineer.  The Amtrak train was northbound when the engineer spotted the body along the tracks.

Chico Police are going to review camera footage to see if Lowder was struck by a southbound Union Pacific train that passed through the area around 3:05 a.m. Friday.

Lowder is originally from the Folsom area. He entered Chico State in fall 2012 and was a pre-business administration student.

The university flag will be lowered Monday in Lowder's memory.
