A 17-year-old girl is on her way back home to Tehama County. Red Bluff Police said she left the state with a young man she met over the internet.
Red Bluff Police were contacted Sunday night by a Red Bluff woman who reported her 17-year-old daughter had run away from home. She said the teenager was possibly en route to Texas with a man.
Detectives determined the runaway had been communicating over the internet with a 17-year-old boy from Texas. The boy and girl arranged for him to drive to Red Bluff, pick up the girl, and drive back to Texas together.
Using technology and multiple agencies, the teens were located in New Mexico on Monday night at 9 p.m. The girl was in good condition. She had never met the boy in person before agreeing to leave California with him.
This is the second case in the last six months where a Red Bluff teen met a stranger over the internet and was willing to travel through multiple states with a suspect.
In March, a 13-year-old Red Bluff girl was picked up by authorities in Massac County, Illinois, after leaving Tehama County with a stranger.
She left with 21-year-old Randy Wilhoite of Tennessee, whom she likely met on a smartphone app.
Red Bluff Police encourage parents to monitor their children's internet activity and be aware that there are people willing to drive hundreds if not thousands of miles to pick up a teen that they contact over the internet.
