CHICO, Calif. -

Thursday night, purple took center stage at the Thursday Night Market in Chico, all to raise awareness of and to support those who are battling cancer.

Every Thursday night the streets outside our newsroom in downtown Chico are flooded with people and vendors but this week, the market took on a whole new look - a shade of purple leading up to the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life".

“It's very powerful.  It makes us more aware that people know about Relay [For Life]”, said team development chair, Susie Rees.

Even though the walk is still more than a month away, Rees wanted to get people thinking about it now.

She had the idea to ask vendors and anyone coming out to the event to wear purple - the same color cancer survivors wear to kick off the relay each year.

“It brings me to tears honestly. I cry every time I see that lap because you got 400 people out here on the track wearing purple shirts,” said Rees.

“It's very moving to do those walks with the people that have been touched by it,” said Celeste Baker.

Baker owns Birkenstock off Broadway.  She and her staff wore purple for this week's market and even marked down all of the store's purple items by 20 percent.

“I think it brings awareness to what's going on with the Relay for Life,” said Baker.

The relay is scheduled for June 8 at Pleasant Valley High School.

“It's really a good time getting people more aware its' coming and it's going to be a huge fantastic event,” said Rees.

If you would like to get a team together for the relay for life you can do so by going to American Cancer Society's website - which is at www.relayforlife.org .
