Traffic stop in Chico forces bomb squad to be called

CHICO, Calif. -

Butte County Sheriff's deputies said on Tuesday at 5:50 p.m. a deputy stopped a vehicle on Cohasset Road just out of the town of Cohasset for a traffic violation.  

The deputy contacted the driver, Wayne Alan Smith.

The Sheriff's Department said during the stop the deputy located a loaded rifle in the vehicle. During a subsequent search of the vehicle a destructive device was located.

Smith was taken into custody on various charges and later booked into the Butte County Jail.

The Butte County bomb squad was called to the scene and removed the destructive device and transported it to a safe location and rendered the device safe.

Smith was booked into the Butte County Jail on charges of possession of a destructive device, transportation of destructive device, possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle and possessing a concealed firearm in a vehicle.

Bail was set at $543,000.
