Redding firefighters responded to a vegetation fire which was started by a transient near Mercy Medical Center Tuesday. The fire occurred around 8:30 a.m. off of Skyline Drive and Octavia Drive.
The Redding Fire Department said the transient admitted to starting the fire and ended up with minor burns to his hands due to setting the fire.
“He stated that he was sleeping in the area on the vacant lot, he used a lighter to light the fire. His statements confirmed that it quickly grew,” said Redding Fire Investigator Patrick O’Connor.
The fire was less than a quarter of an acre. The transient was transported to Mercy Medical Center for treatment of preexisting conditions.
