EUREKA, Calif. -

(AP) - A trial date has been set in the case of a Northern California man charged in the murder of a beloved priest.

Humboldt County Superior Court Judge John Feeney set a date of Aug. 4 for the trail of 44-year-old Gary Lee Bullock, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, attempted arson and vehicle theft in connection with the death of a Eureka, Calif., priest, the Rev. Eric Freed.

Bullock is accused of breaking into the St. Bernard Catholic Church in the early hours of New Year's Day, a few hours after being released from Humboldt County jail, and beating Freed to death.

Freed was found dead in the church rectory later that morning after he didn't show up for morning Mass.
