ORLAND, Calif. -

Residents in Orland are back home after an overnight car crash and gas leak forced them to evacuate.

The collision happened around 11:25 p.m. Tuesday on County Road 9 near County Road N just north of Orland.

The CHP said a suspected drunk driver hit a utility pole sheering it off at its base.  The F-150 pickup then continued 300 feet into a fence, a gas line and a tree.

The gas line ruptured, forcing 15 homes within a half-mile radius to be evacuated for three hours.

The residents returned to their homes around 2:30 a.m.

The driver 37-year-old Jeff Severson of Orland was arrested on suspicion of DUI.   He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
