Chico's undocumented immigrant--and soon to be lawyer--Sergio Garcia is hoping to help students dreaming of a college degree by creating his own scholarship fund.
"Finally now that I was blessed with being able to fulfill one of my dreams, I want to be able to help others to achieve their own dreams," Garcia says.
Garcia fought for years to make his dream of becoming a lawyer a reality and finally last year California legislators passed a law that will allow him to become the first undocumented immigrant to be sworn in as a lawyer.
Now he's hoping to help others who lack the means to achieve their own dreams by starting the Sergio C. Garcia Foundation.
"This scholarship will be open for anybody," he says, "because I did not want to discriminate the way I felt I was discriminated by not being able to have any scholarships when I was going through the scholarship experience."
But not one to balk at a good challenge, Garcia has upped the ante, hoping to raise a lot of money in a little time.
"I want to raise $100,000 by the date I get sworn in," Garcia says. "Which at this point we have picked February 8th so we're basically down to less than 30 days. Sometimes I wonder if I bite more than I can chew."
And with only a few checks waiting to be cashed at this time, Garcia faces a steep hill to climb, and about $97,000 more to realize his latest dream.
