Vigil held for Redding bicyclist hit by car

REDDING, Calif. -

A Redding roadside vigil Wednesday night honored a bicyclist hit and killed.

About two dozen people made their way onto the railroad overpass on Lake Boulevard between Clay Street and St. Marks Street where 54-year-old Charlene Ostergren was hit by a car Monday, May 5.

Friends and family gathered to pay their respects Wednesday with a candlelight vigil. Signs hung on the overpass’ fencing. Charlene’s mother was there and said her daughter traveled this route many time to get home after work.

“I would tell her please don't ride your bike or don't walk after it gets dark,” said Loretta McGrath. “Sometimes, you know, I said have someone walk you home and unfortunately she decided to go home at that time."

On Monday investigators shut down the road for nearly six hours as they collected evidence. They said Ostergren had been riding her bike and was already down in the lane before being hit. Officers are still gathering details of the crash. The car driver involved in the collision was given a field sobriety test. She was not arrested by officers.
