The strong winds could be making lots of electricity for the lucky few who have wind turbines.
Wal-Mart has one at its distribution center off highway 99 in Red Bluff. But it’s been strangely still since it was opened last October.
The one megawatt turbine is expected to provide 20% of the power requirements of the entire distribution center.
Wal-Mart says it is operational but is only used between 8 and 10am. They did not specify why it wasn’t used more.
PG&E and Wal-Mart are working to connect the turbine to the power grid but say the substation needs some new components to allow the turbine to export its surplus power back to the grid.
Both Wal-Mart and PG&E say that the transformer will be completed in late May or early June. When that is finished, the turbine will operate continuously.
