Sunday Clouds and Showers, Possible Wet Storm Next Weekend

Published On: Feb 01 2014 08:27:32 PM CST

Clouds roll in from the west overnight with valley rain showers possible tomorrow morning.

Those showers will become more intense as you head into the mountains in Trinity County, especially if you’re traveling overnight.  The highest peaks could see some snow flurries, but most of the accumulations will be relegated 4,000 feet or higher.  Valley locations could see a spot shower or two early Sunday morning.  Best chances are the hills of west Redding and the City of Shasta Lake as the energy will be looping to the north east.  That means our moisture will largely be gone by mid morning with some residual clouds hanging around through the early afternoon.

The rest of the week we’re under the influence of the west coast ridge once again, but in the form of what’s called a “dirty ridge”.  That means we’ll see clouds periodically over the next week, but still won’t see any rain come our way.  Those systems that do make it over the ridge will be moisture starved and will only kick the winds up come Thursday and Friday.

Farther down the line is a wetter, more promising looking system.  Next weekend the models are picking up on a pretty significant storm that could bring a substantial amount of rain to northern California.  It is very far out to know anything for certain, so this is subject to change, but both the Euro and GFS have been consistently indicating a very wet system for next weekend.  Initial estimates are hinting at storms totals of near 2 inches of rain for parts of the valley.  We’ll be keeping a very close eye on this storm and we’ll be sure to keep you updated as things change.
