REDDING, Calif. -

Several weekend events at the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area have been cancelled due to the government shutdown.

On Friday, Park Supervisor Jim Milestone said several weddings as well as an annual bike race have been cancelled due to the shutdown.

The Team Bigfoot Whiskeytown bike race, a seven year tradition, attracts people locally as well as from Oregon and Nevada.

Kennedy Memorial Road leading into Recreation Area has been closed, unless visitors are accessing the cemetery off the road.

A Park Ranger is currently monitoring cars that enter.

Milestone said there is no biking, fishing, hiking, camping, or swimming and said it's tough to have to turn people away.

"It's really tough because we want visitors to come to the park. We have about 814,000 visitors a year and to tell folks to not to come and enjoy the beauty of the park is really awkward for the staff," said Milestone.

More than 60 workers have to stay home and Milestone said they aren't getting paid.

Rangers are asking people to respect Whiskeytown's closure.

Milestone said warnings have been given to several people who have continued to use Whiskeytown's services but said they will give citations if they have to.
