The Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control District (SMVCD) is advising residents that West Nile virus is now widespread in the county.

The virus has been detected in six different birds, three mosquito samples and three sentinel chickens over a broad area of central Shasta County.

West Nile virus can spread to humans and horses where it can cause disease and potentially death.

The SMVCD advices the public to drain standing water that may produce mosquitoes, use insect repellent and contact the District for help controlling mosquito numbers around your home.
