A house fire in Shasta County claimed the life of a disabled woman, who was unable to escape the fire on her own.
The fire broke out just before 9 a.m. Monday at a home on Maria Drive, off Old Oregon Trail, just northeast of Redding.
Friends and family said the victim, Becky Kendall, was in her late 50's and confined to a wheelchair.
She suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns to at least half her body before her husband Steve Kendall could pull her out.
Her brother David Hayes tells KRCR News Channel 7 she was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center.
Mark Bailey is a longtime friend who lives on the property. He also helped pull her from the burning home.
"The flames were shooting from under the roof, we couldn't get back into the house if we wanted," said Bailey. "It happened so quick."
The home is a total loss. Firefighters call Steve Kendall's actions heroic in getting his wife out of the burning home. Steve Kendall was also treated for burns he suffered to his head and hands.
She suffered from a disorder known as Machado-Joseph disease, which has symptoms similar to Parkinson's.
