Woman suffers major injuries in crash, is arrested
Redding, CALIF. -

A Mendocino County woman suffered major injuries in a crash on Highway 44 early Saturday morning. She was also arrested.

According to the CHP, Shelby Merrifield, 18, was driving drunk on Interstate 5 when she rear-ended a car driven by Donald Campbell, 83, of Redding just before 6:00 a.m.

She apparently hit his car a second time before running off the road and flipping over, landing upside-down on the shoulder of Highway 44.

Merrifield was not wearing a seat belt and had to be extricated. Her 21-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries, and escaped through the sunroof.

In the other car, Campbell and one of his passengers were okay. A second passenger complained of pain.

Merrifield faces charges of felony driving under the influence. She was released to Mercy Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.
