Two lanes of northbound Interstate 5 were closed for about one hour Tuesday morning after an SUV went the wrong way down an off-ramp and slammed into the side of a big rig.

The collision happened just after 10 a.m. at the Shasta Dam Boulevard off-ramp in the City of Shasta Lake, north of Redding.

The CHP said Shannon Martin, 56, of Mountain Gate, went the wrong way down the Shasta Dam Boulevard off-ramp, swerved through bushes and the median and broadsided an 18-wheeler on the interstate.

Investigators estimated she was traveling 60 miles per hour when she hit the truck.

Martin refused medical treatment at the scene but was taken to hospital for observation.   The CHP said she may have been unconscious when she hit the truck.  Officers did not think she was driving under the influence.

The force of the impact ripped a wheel from Martin's vehicle and bent the axles on the truck and trailer.

All the northbound lanes of the interstate reopened just after 11 a.m.
