WWII era grenades shut down Chico gas station, surrounding area
A pair of World War II era grenades forced the closure of a Chico gas station and surrounding area for hours Saturday afternoon.
It happened just before 11 a.m. near the Tower Mart on East Lassen and Godman Ave in North Chico.
Police say a man was cleaning out his father's belongings when he found two WWII era hand grenades.
He was on his way to hand the devices over to the fire department when he instead stopped a deputy with the Butte County Sheriff's Office.
Not knowing if the grenades were live or not, the deputy called the Butte County Bomb Squad and had the gas station and surrounding area closed down.
The bomb squad arrived, removed the grenades from the man's truck and took them to a location to render them safe.
The gas station and streets were then allowed to reopen.
Police want to remind people who may find explosive devices not to transport them, but instead to evacuate the area call authorities immediately.
